So what happened? I'm just a ordinary guy like you. I have a hand few of passions that are built on principals that are unwavering. But what sets me apart from many people is that I’m willing to do whatever it takes to make my goals, ambitions, and dreams come true. Moreover, I encourage you to do the same. Find the things in your life that makes you happy and relentlessly pursue it.
So, I have been providing firearm and personal protection consulting for 6 years, and never had a complaint. I never wanted to be a firearm instructor; the reason for this is because everyone and their uncle is a firearm instructor. I never wanted to be an NRA Instructor. Why? Because it’s cheap, anyone with a heartbeat can be an NRA instructor (a felon could be an NRA instructor they don’t even do background checks – jerks). Quite frankly, there’s simply nothing to it (being a NRA instructor).
Moreover, I have to say for the record that there has never been not even a scratch on one of my Clients - whom I respect and love deeply. If there are any people out there believing the rumor(s) about someone being shot in a VODA session I would tell them to prove it because I sure can’t (because it never happened). The reason for this is because it’s impossible for a negligent discharge to occur within a VODA Session. Why because ammunition is not allowed in the training area. Hey, if you didn’t know, guns don’t go bang all by themselves.
But on the good part. I thought all the running and gunning was over while in Graduate School (FSU Bronco Pride – Attitude Check – LOVE My HBCU). However, this is one of the few times I was wrong. I was wrong not because I failed to foresee armed convicts, because where I stayed in North Carolina (Bonnie Dune) I see them every day and every night. However, I was wrong in the sense that I thought I could escape being who I was and still am: a Gunfighter. Serving as a North Carolina Corrections Officer on the night of October 31, 2014 (low to no light) after providing a free introduction to firearms session to a new VODA Client(s) because her home was invaded.
My Client left and I was starting to pack up the firearms that were on display. That’s when I noticed my dog (a puppy) was getting ready to bust a number 2 in my house! Big no-no in my house so I took my dog out to go bust that number 2 in doing so I had slung the AK-47 I had in my hands around my back and minutes later that’s when it happened (again).
Long strings of shots were fired (9mm) and I heard a woman (who will not be identified) scream in distress: "Stop shooting my babies are in here!” Some Fuck Boy yells out while randomly discharging the firearm: "I don’t give a fuck! Fuck you bitch, fuck the Police and fuck anybody who come!" As he continued to discharge the firearm, I peeped my head out my gate to see exactly what was going on. I really couldn’t get a good eyeball on the shooter because there was a truck parked in my field of view. However, I could not see the flash signature. So I stepped further out.
I remember it like yesterday and yes, yes I see the shooter. For me when I’m in high stress event time slows down. I yell out: "Put the gun down, put the gun down!” The shooter turns to me and fires 2-3 rounds at me. I return fire, with 1 round to be exact with an AK while on the move going toward the shooter, giving commands. I remember him limping a few feet before going down. His Fuck Boy brethren then picked up the firearm and began shooting at me, I disengaged the AK safety and begin to service him with suppressive fire. He ran behind the houses in order to flee the scene.
See in the "Hood" people don’t talk to the Police, and they wear this like a badge of honor, until they need the Police because some Convict shoved a .357 in their mouth. This “no snitching” culture is a negative because it perpetuates dangerous criminal activity like this in every "Hood" in this country and it is a disgrace; but it is what it is. When the Fayetteville Police arrived no one wanted to talk and cooperate.
The Fayetteville Police Forensic Technician took samples from both parties’ hands (mines and his) to run through the G.S.R., the Convict was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the center mass (some schmuck made a rumor that I shot him in the leg – people know I don’t go for that leg bullshit) and I was taken to Cumberland County Jail. I spent a few hours in and got out thanks to my dear friend Jazzy B (I love you). It should be noted that the gun used by the Convict(s) was found at another crime scene.
But what’s crazy is this. I was still allowed to work as a North Carolina Corrections Officer pending the results of the case. The case took so long to get dismissed because the Convict had a bag for a stomach because he was “Smoked Checked”. To tell the truth, my boss had it in for me. Not because I did anything wrong (either on the job or because I shot some Fuck Boy) but because I was an Achiever and I was making people that worked at the prison look bad for not doing their job (lazy bums). See, what you Ladies and Gentlemen don’t know, is that the North Carolina Department of Correction’s is a joke. I say this because you have essentially have five types of Officers in the NCDOC.
The Achiever (myself), the Officer that does just enough to get by to make it to retirement, the Officer that does favors for the inmates, the Officer that sleeps on the job and the Officer that sleeps with the Inmates and other Officers. That’s right, it’s a whorehouse in Master Control especially on second shift. That’s pretty much what NCDOC consist of. It was funny because when I first got there because I’m disciplined and well trained some people thought I was SBI (State Bureau of Investigation). WTF!
You might be thinking: “What about the assault that happened to you while working for NCDOC?” Well let’s say this, if you have not been assaulted you simply aren’t doing your job. Put it this way: “If the Inmates like you, you are the problem.” Since when do Convict like Law Enforcement? NEVER. That’s just what it is. SIDE NOTE: If you see someone finding comedy in the fact that a law enforcement officer was assaulted that tell you something about them. According to the FBI: "In 2014, of the 48,315 officers assaulted while performing their duties, 28.3 percent were injured.”
Outside of that, people are shocked as to why I train using real guns. And for the record no one has been shot in any VODA session. Listen we are grown (at least we should be) and if you don’t know not to believe everything you hear and read online you’re a dumb ass - period. Especially when people cannot produce proof of what they are claiming to be true about someone else (especially that they don’t know). Secondly, what grown man sits a computer and makes up rumors about another man they don’t know. Sounds like some down low shit to me. But anyway, if you wish to know why I train Clients in the fashion that I do, look no further than the VODA website: on why we don’t use blue guns.
"There are many reasons as to why we do not utilize “Blue Guns” for our training purposes that are not listed here. However, we do not use them for the following purposes
Biochemical – When facing the "business end" of any weapon system the body will produce a response: “Fight or Flight”. It is then and only then that we obtain the opportunity to truely explore the varible that matter most – "willingness to fight". Biochemically the body will change its composition [cortisol (stress) levels, dopamine, epinephrine (adrenaline), norepinephrine (brain, body, action)]. By working in this manner, we at VODA seek to effectively take small steps to help rewire the clients neurotransmitters thus, increasing the likelihood of survival.
Repetition & Muscle Memory – Good luck cycling a slide on a "Blue Gun" or nearly any training pistol worth anything for that matter. At VODA we are big on building efficiency through continuous repetition and muscle memory. Whether cycling the slide or loading the cylinder, pressing the trigger, or aligning sights on a real human subject, there is not training pistol that will give you that. Why? Because training pistols simply do not have the same physical attributes of a actual firearm; what they lack are the character, feel, and authenticity of an actual firearm. Like Coke-A-Cola: “There’s Nothing Like The Real Thing”.
Realism – Why train different that you fight? Even more important, why train different than you fight then expect to perform at optimum levels when it really counts? Even though you are training with a “Blue Gun” or training pistol and you may simulate that with all your heart following the “Safety Rules” (which are meant to be broken to a degree) your brain knows it’s not a real gun thus, it will act accordingly for purposes of efficiency. It should be noted that our Force on Force work is truly one of a kind."
In closing for those that insist on trying to tell me or others about my story, or my life for that matter. Take a hike, my life is really not that interesting. How can you tell some else's story and you live in another state and never met or talked to the person? So what I grew up in a multi cultural household (Caribbean) on the South Side of Chicago that's my business not yours. No one including YOU can help the family we are born in to or in my case adopted by. I’m just a ordinary guy doing extraordinary things and standing up for what he believes in at any cost. If you have the courage I encourage you to do the same.
