EVALUATION | CIVILIAN OPERATOR™/SUB MACHINE GUN (SMG)/HOME DEFENSE

While working on the latest VODA Project something really challenged my thinking on the most optimum weapon systems for HSD (Home Self-Defense).  As I sat back looking at the Project it occurred to me that maybe we got the weapons selection in the realm of Urban Combat somewhat wrong. Could it be that maybe the rifle is NOT the best HSD (Home Self-Defense) option currently available? I mean look at all the variables that come into play when you use a rifle for home defense in the Urban Environment, some of which are as follows:

  • OVER PENETRATION

  • SIZE (LENGTH)

  • WEIGHT

  • LOUDNESS

  • REALISM

EVO SCORPION CALIBER 9MM

Just these for things alone are somethings that we should really examine. And in doing so I came to the conclusion that the rifle is not the optimum weapon system for the Civilian Operator™. It is my position that the Sub-Machine Gun or SMG is the most optimum weapon system for the Urban Civilian Operator™. Why? This is not to say that you shouldn't own or use a rifle in an urban setting because you surely can. However, let’s examine some of the above mentioned variables in relationship to the SMG.

H&K MP5 CALIBER 9MM

No matter the weapon system used in an SD (self-defense) application you will inevitable run the risk or over penetration. But the one thing that we should be paying attention to is mitigating risk. A rifle in comparison to a SMG is more likely to over penetrate not the body of the Bad Guy but building construction materials such as walls. This is especially problematic if you are shooting inside your home (discharging a firearm into an occupied/unoccupied dwelling). If you are not increasing the risk of harming someone in the next room you are defiantly increasing the risk of harming someone in the next house! This is important because in the Urban Environment Homes are often time built tightly together. In some urban environment they have more town homes such as in Baltimore - where the only thing supporting two houses is a wall!

H&K UMP CALIBER .45

The Civilian Operator™ in conjunction with the total overall length of a SMG really shines when used in the Urban Environment  as you are better able to maneuver around the tighter corners and narrow halls which often times contains doors better than if you were using a rifle. This allows for quicker shot times and the application of faster shooting. For women this is especially important because of many times they appear to struggle with the body mechanics required to facilitate a good balance between movements and shooting. With the size of the SMG reduced in comparison to the rifle, the weapon system is more able to "work in harmony with their bodies".

H&K MP7 CALIBER 4.6×30MM

Weight in conjunction with the length is another chief concern because the weight of a rifle will at some point produce a "sway" at the muzzle either while shooting or during target acquisition. Again this is something I was forced to consider when I was examining the pros and cons of both weapon systems - rifle in comparison to the SMG. No doubt the AR-15 is light, but an SMG is lighter. There’s just no getting around that.

SIG SAUER MPX CALIBER 9MM

If you have ever fired a firearm from confined spaces they are LOUD! So I think for in order to preserve the hearing protect of not only yourself but you love ones it wouldn’t it be wise to seek out the right weapon system in the right caliber that will not be so harsh on people hearing! Think about it put your ego to the side. 55.6/7.62x39/.308 inside verses 9mm or even a .45. Do the math here! Make sure you have hearing protection if possible.

KRISS VECTOR CALIBER 9MM / CALIBER .45

The last variable is realism. You are more likely to shoot someone with a pistol caliber than you are with a rifle caliber - there just no getting around that. So with that being said, why not use the most likely caliber that you are familiar with and use it in a more robust way such as firing it from a SMG? The likelihood of you firing your gun in SD (Self-Defense) is slightly under 1%. Trust me more than likely the 9mm or .45 will get the job done as a Civilian Operator™.

In short when the Civilian Operator™ utilizes a SMG in the Urban Environment we will see an increase in Fight-Efficiency™ (this includes speed).

So what is a SMG? According to John T. Thompson inventor of the Thompson Machine Gun or the "Tommy Gun" - you know the ones used in the old school Chicago and New York Gangster Movies which gave the FBI a run for their money. A sub-machine gun is defined as a magazine-fed, automatic carbine designed to fire pistol cartridges. So without further due, there are many kinds of SMG's out there but here are some of the VODA RECOMMENDED SMG's for the Civilian Operator™
